What Is Basalt and Where Is It Used?

Basalt forms when lava cools quickly at the earth’s surface. It is usually dark grey to black, fine-grained and very dense, made up mainly of pyroxene, plagioclase and olivine.

Its high compressive strength, low water absorption and frost resistance make it ideal for paving, kerbs, steps, facades and landscaping, as well as interior floors and walls.

The surface can be left natural or finished honed, brushed, sandblasted or split-face, giving very different looks from the same stone.
